It is considered that nunchaku come from Okinava. To date this archipelago is a part of Japan. Here people do not speak Japanese. Therefore “nunchaku” is not a Japanese word. This word is written as “nu-n-cha-ku” in katakan (syllabic alphabet to write foreign words) or by use of two Chinese hieroglyphs “double club”.
It is considered nunchaku is leaved with Chinese at Okinava.
It is unknown exact provenance of nunchaku. There are several versions about it. I arrange them by degrees of spreading and of verisimilitude.
1. The flail for trashing of rice. Nunchaku resembles such flail. But in fact it has a long handle (for approximately as person’s growth. Originally the flail is roped with short part of it.
2. The first emperor of Chinese dynasty Ñóí was an inveterate traveler. One time he was exposed to attack by robbers during his traveling. ׿àî Êóàíüèíü feared such attacks and therefore he always carried a long pobe. So during one of traveling his favorite pobe was cut into pieces. But ׿àî could discover way out of the situation. He tied one piece to other and noticed that such arm is more effective. His new pobe was cut too and ׿àî again tied together pieces and turned so called triple flail. It was a kind of nunchaku.
3. When Japanese seizure Okinava, mass disarmament of nobles take place. Nobles were obliged to move to partymonies peasants’ villages. Peasants gave hostile reception to unbidden guests and wanted to say their away with every possible ways. Peasants used all anything one could lay hands on (for example, sticks, pitchforks, oars, sickles). They noticed that two tied together sticks were good arm. Subsequently nunchaku becomes very popular.
4. The founder of dynasty Ñå consolidated three provinces of Okinava (Õîêóäçàí, Íàíàäçàí and Òþäçàí) to one kingdom. The capital was fixed Ñþðè. Later on many principalities were united. In order to avoid a possible revolt it was made the decision about disarmament of population. The peasants were obliged to work and did not concern with battle art in contrast to nobles. The battle art was hobby for nobles-aristocrats (êóäçîêó) and necessity for nobles-soldiers (ñèäçîêó).
